Michael Anthony Russo-Featured Artist

Posted in Community & Featured by Virago

Virago’s NEW featured artist for the month of December is Michael Anthony Russo. His artwork has a young, hip, urban feel to it that keeps you engaged. Sharp and clear images with great use of complimentary colors and wonderful lighting. Virago is very pleased and excited to have his artwork on our walls, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

“The camera is just a vessel for me to communicate to the world.”

Michael was born on August 18th, 1986, and has been a life time resident of Lower Bucks County. He has always positively influenced those around him and has many accomplishments he is proud of. Michael is a Pennsbury High School Class of 2004 graduate, and went on to receive his Associates Degree in Business Administration before moving on to the Art Institute of Philadelphia to perfect his talents. He began the hobby of photography a little over three years ago, but it quickly turned into something more than just a mere hobby. He soon realized the affect photography had on him and the fact that he thoroughly enjoyed capturing moments in time.

Michael’s interests are broad and cover an array of different spectrums. He enjoys cars and most everything involved with the automotive industry, whether it is driving, modifying, shooting, discussing, etc. He also enjoys pizza (Margarita Pizza in specific), clothing design, snowboarding, and of course, Photography. Michael is an extremely well rounded individual and is always open to new subjects, techniques, and ideas involving photography.

Michael has a number of accomplishments he can be extremely proud of. He has had his work featured in a variety of magazines including Carbon 8 and S3 Magazine, and a huge accomplishment being a feature in Modified Magazine containing his photography as well as his own written article. He also covers different events ranging from small parties to bigger events such as weddings. Michael has also had photographs published in an SPCA Newsletter, and a fast growing automotive blog, Canibeat.com.

There are a number of people and idea’s that have been influential and inspirational to the work Michael produces. Michael especially enjoys the work of three photographers in particular: Gregory Crewdson, Joe Brooks, and Brian Lanker. Michael also credits a teacher of his, Leah MacDonald, for being truly inspirational as a mentor.

“I generate an idea and I try to replicate the picture as I see it in my head”

Michael considers his photography to have more of a Modernist feel. He enjoys shooting just about everything, ranging from automotive, portraiture, and Studio Product, to Weddings and Commercial/Executive work, and especially enjoys Editorial Photography. He is an extremely down to earth individual and always pours extreme detail and knowledge into his work- and it shows.

“I’m not a writer I’m not a painter. I only speak best with the medium which speaks to me the clearest; this is how I communicate best with my heart, my brain, and to the world.”

Q- If you could photograph anything in the world, what would it be?

A- As hard as this is to answer since there are so many subjects and figures I would love to shoot, it would have to be an iconic/inspirational figure in our society.

Q- What is your ideal career?

A- To be a photographer for a reputable magazine (automotive or clothing industries) and also take part in the marketing aspect of the company.

Q- What is the last song played on your iPod?

A- Johnny Cash- Gods Gonna Cut You Down

Q- If you had to choose between the East Coast and West Coast, which would you choose?

A- West Coast. It just feels much more relaxed and friendly.

Q- How many tattoo’s do you have, and what are they of?

A- I have three Tattoo’s.

1. My right arm is of the Day of the Dead. I enjoy much of the art that is inspired from Day of the Dead.

2. My left side (ribs) is tattood with a Grapevine. It reminds him of summers spent as a kid at his Grandmother’s house. It is also symbolic to my Italian heritage (wine).

3. Lower Waste- “Death will find me alive” written in Italian. Important to me in remembering to live life with no regrets.

Q- What is your favorite camera lens?

A- Cannon 45mm TSL

“When I compose a photograph, I do it with my heart which produces raw emotion for the viewer to grab a hold of and do with it what they want”
