Nutmeg Designs Artist of the Month!

We are so excited to have Margaret and Wayne back with their beautiful art! Stop by the month of June to check it out! They are also showing across the street at The Water Gallery so go check it out there as well!

Nutmeg Designs: Catching the eye; delighting the soul.

Nutmeg Designs is a joint venture between Wayne Stratz and

Margaret Almon who live in a one-bedroom two-studio row home in Lansdale, PA. They desire to spread the joy that they experience while working with glass to the homes, gardens, prayer spaces and offices of their supporters and fans.

Margaret’s desire to make mosaics began when she saw an amazing mosaic by Hildreth Meiere at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Wernersville, PA. At that time she was known for her award winning poetry, but was loving making collages out of paper. She found her calling in the beauty of glass mosaics. Margaret is now a full-time mosaicist.

Wayne doodled his way through high school, college, and staff meetings. A desire to do something new with the doodles took him briefly into quilting, but then glass called and now his Stratozpheric designs hang in many a window. He is a science and horticulture teacher as well as a stained glass artist.

Margaret and Wayne do collaborations on signs of their favorite words (Joy, Hope, Jazz, Garden) and commissions of clients’ favorite words or house numbers. Wayne designs and cuts out the pieces for the letters and numbers. In 2011, they were commissioned to make the 9 Fruits of the Spirit in mosaic to overlook a client’s labyrinth.

Four increasingly busy years of displaying at fine craft shows has spread the news of their art from Lansdale, North to the Lehigh Valley, West to Lancaster and Kutztown, East to Doylestown, and South to Chestnut Hill and Elkins Park, and beyond through their Nutmeg Designs Etsy Shop.

Influences:

Quilts: Margaret and Wayne are kept warm by an amazing log cabin quilt made by Wayne’s grandmother. They love attending quilt shows where they are inspired by the designs and colors.

Nature and Spirituality: Wayne’s biology degree shines forth in stained glass birds and vines, and Margaret’s nautilus mandalas and rainbow panels consistently catch the eye of folks. Many fans exist of Margaret’s large Celtic crosses, and her healing mandalas embellished with sparkling glass. Wayne goes on a silent retreat most summers where new designs emerge as he plays with color and shapes. His Wernersville Cross design is one of his most popular designs.

Color and Glass and Jazz: Sometimes it is a color or type of glass which grabs their creative attention, and leads to a new piece. As jazz flows through their studios, they let themselves be free to see what happens.
